There is something really relaxing about sitting at Panera’s on a Sunday afternoon and contemplating the meaning of life and the week ahead. I will admit that one of my flaws is my need to plan, plan, plan. Both personally and professionally I have always used Project tracking programs, a PDA, my laptop, a pad in my purse or you name it to have a list of what I am to do. My teaching is the same as well. I am usually planning several weeks ahead and thrive on change.
One of the big differences I have seen between education and the business world involves the comfort level of change. In business, it is all about change. Your goal is to have the next new better approach or idea. Education–not so much. I am not sure if it is because the market is not as great of a factor, the tenure security system, or the nature of the folks who go into the field. Do you agree? Why are many educators so cautious? Am I wrong? Are we looking ahead with new ideas in the plan, or are we just copying the planbook from the year before? I work with alot of teachers who are interested in new and different approaches. I also see many who teach with the same method and lesson they had 10 years ago.
Does it matter? How does this approach work in education, and not elsewhere? Does it?
